Our client based in London is looking to recruit a Fabric Engineer to work within the Building Services team providing carpentry and joinery skills to maintain the fabric of the building and its facilities.

Job Responsibilities:

  • To carry out carpentry/joinery and small building works as instructed by Managers, either on their own or with other colleagues or external contractors.
  • To upkeep the general fabric of the building, which can include work and installation of wooden doors, partitioning, plasterboard walls, shelving, locks, and ironmongery and generally carrying out repairs and maintenance as required.
  • To undertake repairs and general maintenance to the upholstery of the event chairs and other upholstered building fabric and ensure that they are maintained in a safe and quality condition for the event’s customers and audiences.
  • With other building service team colleagues ensure that there are adequate stocks of ironmongery and building materials or regular consumables to ensure the efficient operation of the building and advise the Building Services Manager of order requirements.
  • To monitor and control any external or contracted staff within your specialist discipline as instructed by your Manager.
  • Working with others ensures that the carpenter’s workshop is maintained in a clean and tidy condition that all sawdust and shavings are cleared away and that all machinery and equipment is used and maintained in a safe and workable condition.
  • That all Health and Safety working practices are maintained and supported with the appropriate use of signage and hazard warning equipment.
  • Where required to assist the Show Department with the installation of flooring or facilities for the staging of events.
  • To provide emergency cover within their skills ability during working hours in the event of facility or equipment failure and to assist as part of the Building Services team to provide operational solutions which assist the smooth running of events or if required the safe evacuation of customers.
  • Any other reasonable instruction as requested by the Building Services Manager, or the Facilities Manager.

Job Requirements:

  • Ideally have completed a recognized form of craft training, either through apprenticeship, City and Guilds, or NVQ in Carpentry/Joinery.
  • To have extensive varied experience undertaking construction project work.
  • To have an appreciation and acceptance of the high standards of craftsmanship required when working within a Grade 1 listed building.
  • To have a flexible and adaptable approach to undertaking work and to understand those show event requirements may change the priority of work at short notice that will be undertaken.
  • To be able to work within an in-house building services team supporting and assisting a variety of colleagues and trades.
  • A team player with excellent interpersonal skills and capable of working on a task without direct supervision and where required taking sole responsibility for work.
  • An ability to work under pressure and at times to tight deadlines.
  • To be physically fit to be able to work around this very large building, capable of walking up and down large numbers of staircases when required.
  • There is also some working at heights and within confined spaces.
  • Be punctual, reliable, and trustworthy.
  • To have an appreciation of the entertainment industry ‘special experience’ that the company works to provide to all its customers that attend events, and to work to assist this process.
